When buying travel insurance, holidaymakers should remember that factors other than price are also important, the ABTA has advised.
Sean Tipton, a spokesperson for the travel association, explained that cheaper policies may not afford the same level of protection in areas such as medical cover.
His comments followed research carried out by Essential Travel which claimed that big-name brands such as Barclays, the Post Office and American Express are overcharging for travel cover by as much as 50 per cent.
As an example, the group explained that the Post Office charged £40 for cover for a European break, more than double the actual going-rate value of the policy.
Responding, Mr Tipton advised: "Shop around and see what kind of deals are on offer, but you need to bare in mind that [with] insurance, like any other product, the levels of cover on offer can vary quite drastically."
Travellers may also benefit from shopping around for the best deals on foreign currency online.
