Published by Mark Smith-HalvorsenHolidaymakers planning an adventurous trip abroad in the coming months have been urged to think about the effect that visiting fragile attractions and destinations will have on the local habitat.Erika Harms, executive director of the Tourism Sustainability Council (TSC) and senior advisor on Tourism at the United Nations Foundation, said that in many cases there are no firm tourism management strategies in place to protect some of the world's most spectacular attractions from the damage done by large visitor numbers.Advising those planning a trip to a site of historical and cultural interest, Ms Harms recommended: "Get to know your destination, get to know the communities, get out of your hotel and make a beneficial impact so that the resources stay at the place."Her comments followed the latest annual Threatened Wonders report from Wanderlust magazine, which identified the UK's Stone Henge, Peru's Macchu Picchu, Jaisalmer in India and the Bay of Fires in Tasmania as some of the world's most endangered attractions.
