Monday, 14 December 2009 09:31:23 GMT

Published by Jamie JemmesonInternational business payment managers are finding it difficult to maintain a responsible travel policy during the sustained economic constraint, according to the Business Travel Magazine.Commenting recently, Gill Upton, editor of the specialist magazine, said that while a green travel policy is a very important issue for shareholders, many corporate buyers are being forced to de-prioritise ethical considerations in favour of cost benefits."It is very difficult to equate cost versus being sustainable because often you'll find that the sustainable option is more expensive. In the middle of the recession, that is a really tough call for a corporate buyer," she said. However, Ms Upton stressed that a carefully managed green travel policy can become self-sustaining and insisted that the issue will be back under the spotlight once economic conditions improve. Her comments followed a recent poll by Business Travel & Meetings Show which revealed that 67 per cent of companies do not have a green travel policy in place. For more information on international payments, visit our Smart FX site
