Foreign currency strategists at UBS have advised buying the dollar over the yen as a haven currency next year.
In a research note, currency analysts including Geoffrey Kendrick and Geoffrey Yu identified a sharp increase in orders from its clients to sell the yen.
Bloomberg reports that internal figures from the group show net sales of the yen constituted 21.5 per cent of the currency pair's total traded volume last week, compared with an average of 3.2 per cent in the month to December 25th.
"The yen was on the back foot amid a very light week for flows [...] We expect the yen to underperform in 2010," the researchers wrote.
The dollar rose against the yen during trading this morning (December 30th) on the back of stronger treasury note yields. There is also growing speculation that the US Federal Reserve will begin removing fiscal support measures in the new year.
The yen also fell broadly against major counterparts as stronger macroeconomic data encouraged a flight to higher-yield currencies.
